After driving his architect, Frederick DeLongchamps, crazy for most of the the 1930's, Whittell
finally settled on a design for the Lodge. Construction was started in 1938, and continued for
the next several years. The exterior stonework was done by Native American masons trained at
the Stewart Indian School in Nevada. The interior woodwork done by Norwegian carpenters.
The nature-themed wrought ironwork--lamps, door hardware, fireplace screens, and exterior
decorations--was done by a group of Italian craftsmen from the San Francisco Bay Area.
This is a shot of the Lodge's Great Room, the main area for entertaining.
