The plumage of the Chilean flamingo is paler than other species. Colors vary within a range of white, pale pink, rose, to salmon. The shrimp diet is what gives flamingos their color. Flamingos can live up to 50 years.

In 2000, after years of unsuccessful breeding attempts at the San Franciso Zoo, the nesting site was moved to the front of the exhibit and covered with special nesting mud, and the flamingos have been breeding. In 2009, flamingos were brought in from the Phoenix Zoo to "stir" things up.
