Loons on Nettie Lake

I recently spent a few days with three other photographers and Charles Glatzer at a Shoot the Light workshop. Our main objective was to photograph loons on Nettie Lake in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. There are two pair of loons on the lake that have been habituated to the Nettie Lake Lodge pontoon boat, allowing us to get very close without stressing the birds.

My primary objective was to get some images of loons with chicks. Alas, this year, of all years, neither pair had chicks. While we were there, one of the pairs had mated and was nesting but it would be a few weeks before chicks. The other pair had abandoned their nest.

But, we did get some great images and will have to come back again for chicks.
