Issan is the area in the North-east of Thailand, usually ignored by most tourists who head to the beaches of the south, or the northern hills.
The people of Issan are generally poor, but welcoming. Unlike the tourist ghettos of Chiang Mai and Phuket, the locals don't see "farangs" as walking ATMs !
