This photo was taken on the Nauset shore one freezing morning in March. Although this tree was on the edge of the marsh and shore I could walk out across the frozen marsh due to a week of solid cold weather with temperatures below freezing day and night.
I was lucky that I saw the tree quite early before the sun crept up too high as the contrast of direct sunlight and shadow on these bleached roots would have rendered the photo impossible. As it is the low contrast allowed me to pull out the detail in the wood grain making this a wonderful natural sculpture.
