March : Barnacle Roses

The shore south of the Chatham Light has been very productive for me this year. Aside from photos of the sand flats at low tide there are trees, branches and in this case an old lobster pot washed up on the beach. The barnacles that encrust the wooden frame, reminiscent of a cross, appear as roses to me.
I deliberately positioned the camera at an angle so that only the upper section of the cross was in focus. The receding lower section, the side rails in the backsground and the colourful rope handle that hangs down in front give the photo a wonderful depth.

This photo was taken with a Carl Zeiss 35-70 Vario Sonnar lens in it's close focus/macro position on a Canon 1ds Mk2.
