Comparison of NikonScan and VueScan

Not until getting a DSLR in recent years, I had been using film for more than 10 years.

I used to scan my slides by film scanner in order to have some post-editings with Photoshop.

What I have is the Nikon Super Coolscan LS4000ED. The film was Fuji RDPIII.

Below images were scanned by the same film scanner, but with different scanning programs, one is the Nikon Scan 4.02 and the other one is the VueScan 8.0.14.

The scanning conditions of both scanning programs were set at 4000 dpi, 14 bit and 16x multi sampling. Normal ICE on was set in Nikon Scan (there were two ICE settings: normal / enhanced); while light ICE on was set in Vue Scan (there were three settings: light / medium / enhanced.

My conclusion is:

Nikon Scan 4.02 VueScan 8.0.14
Scanning Time 15 mins 15 mins
Colour Preference (RDPIII) warmer cooler
Grain Size smaller larger
Sharpness lower higher
Contrast lower higher
Resolution lower higher
Saturation lower higher
