On November 13, 2005, Wes Freedman, prominent Scranton businessman, was awarded, at a brunch in his honor, as the Amos Lodge, B'nai B'rith Man of the Year. For over 30 years, Wes Freedman owned and operated the Wes Freedman Catalog Showrooms. Wes gave much time to community activities. He served on the boards of Johnson School, PNC Bank, and Marywood College (now University) as President of its board . He currently sits on the boards of Mercy Hospital in Scranton, the Jewish Home of Eastern Pennsylvania, and Elan Gardens, an assisted living facility and the Foundation for the Jewish Elderly of Eastern PA. He is currently President of the Board of Webster Towers a senior high rise apartment for the independent aging. He has also served as President of the Jewish Home from 1994 through 1997. During that period he led the organization in the planning, designing and building of Elan Gardens. He personally supervised much of the day to day construction of the facility along with Jewish Home staff. He was a founding member of the board of Elan Gardens and served as its second President from 2001 to 2004. He also played a crucial role in negotiating the purchase of the 20 acre property on Venard Road on which Elan Gardens is located.
