Siege Machines - Exhibition in Malbork Castle

Bettering ram

A battering ram is undoubtedly one of the oldest, the simpliest but At the same time the most effective siege engines. It was used to splitter gates or crack a wall in its weakest point in order to open the way into the besieged fortress for the attackers. The battering ram was rolled to the chosen place and destroying of the obstacle started. The defenders tried to prevent it by intercepting the ram’s log and therefore making further attacks impossible.

Protective shed

The main objective of the building protective sheds during medieval sieges was to protect the besiegers approaching the fortress. Frequently tactic was to undermine the walks or fill up the moats and then shed proved to be extremely useful by shielding engineering and sappers troops during a combat operation.

Siege tower

The beginning of the use of the siege towers dates back to the antiquity. In the medieval Poland, they were used during sieges of various walled cities and castles. They were the complicated in the terms of construction siege engines, therefore they were used when other measures were proved ineffective. However the efforts put into building a siege tower usually resulted in a success.

Perriere

Perriere is a small hurling machine which shoots projectiles using force of human muscles. They were usually located on the top of ramparts and walls so that they could be used to shoot on a great distance making it difficult for assailants to get closer to the stormed fortress.
