25th Infantry Div. 65th Engineer Bn. Company E

The 65th Engineer Bn. left its home base in Schofield Barracks Hawaii On Janurary 4th, 1966. we left Hawaii by ship. We were on the USNS General Nelson M. Walker with all our Equipment. Elements of the 1st Battalion 14th Infantry (GOLDEN DRAGONS) were also onboard. On JANUARY 16, 1966 the USNS General Walker dropped anchor in Cam Rahn Bay.The 1st Battalion 14th Infantry left the ship headed for Pleku. We sailed South heading for Vung Tau Where we would leave the ship. From Vung Tau we flew to Bien Hoa where we would wait for our equipment and the trip to Cu Chi.
All of the pictures were taken between January and October 1966. Most of them are at the Base Camp in Cu Chi. When I arrived in Cu Chi there was no Base Camp. We were there to build one before the rest of the divsion arrived. We were supported by the 1st Infantry division (Big Red 1) till our Division started arriving. I was in E company (the Bridge Co.)We didn't build many bridges so most of the time we used our trucks to haul in supplies from Saigon. A trip a day for the first month or two. After that we did a lot of construction around the base camp. I left Viet Nam in October of 1966.

Thanks for posting the pictures, I also came over on the same boat, was in Company E and drove the AVLB. The photo of the shoulder walking across the bridge looks a lot like Sgt. Otis Thompson. If that is correct then I was probably the one in the tank laying the bridge.

Bob, Great pictures, I did not take only a few while in Cu Chi Feb 66 to Oct66. I was the Company Clerk for Company A.

Bob, I was in HHC 65TH from Dec. 63 to June 66. In Jan. 66,was sent as grader operator with B Co. to Cu Chi. Cut the roads to make way for the rest of Div.
Some one you may remember, Ed Sherlock E Co. clerk in 64/65, we still get together often.

First, thank you for these great pictures. I was a Medic with Echo Company in 1968-69. At the time, Echo was indeed building bridges. I was there when a large bridge feel in the water in Go Dau Ha in 1969. Your pictures preceeded me. You guys probaly built much of the infrastructure that I lived in and around when I arrived in base camp at Cu Chi. Yes, while in base camp we had the luxury of a "hooch". But in the field we slept under the sky or in 5 foot culverts while on the bridge operations. Thanks for jogging some very important memories!

Charlie Co. 65th Eng. Aug.67 Aug68 Came to Co. with Sgt.Pyver and Gary Scott They both went to motor pool. I went to Second Platoon 1st squad. Drove for CO for couple of months
then spent last month in Commo shack.

hello names pete lewis was in e co 65th "river rats"nui bah dinh tay ninh cu chi 1968 was one of 10 who went out as support to other units humping c4& inflatable boat-7 of us made it home..liked the logo on e co water tower cu chi rat fink with m60...after more than 40 years..still flash back....left my youth and my soul over there;you can never really go home afterwards..wanted you to know that e co served with honor.

My father was a Sargent (E5) in the 65th Engineer Bn. Company C from 67-68. His name is Angelo "Vinny" Perrino. He was based out of Cu Chi and only has a few pictures of his time there. Thanks for creating this gallery. We both enjoyed looking through your photos.

I was with D comp.in Dau tieng in 1968 and was wounded 2 times and medivaced out Dec 12,1968 to Japan and then back to the WORLD.

I was with HQ Co. Jun 70 to Nov 70.
Then they went back to Hi. I was transferred to the 20th Eng Brigade.

Does anyone have any pictures of FSB Billy's Corner in March 1967? Company C, 65th Engineers was there on a road building project at that time. It was on the Cambodian border near Tay Ninh.

I was with B co. 65th from 12-67 to 12-68. In the shadow of Nui Ba Din...the balck vergin mountain, most of the time. It lived up to its name during Tet of 68. Great photos..Takes me back!

My father left for Vietnam as part of the 65th but I'm not sure which company. His name was Jerome Paley and he would have been an E8 at the time. I believe he went advance party in October of 1965 then with the main body in January of 66. I'm trying to find someone who might have known him...a post card from Midway enroute to Vietnam shows the route he took. h egot ill while in-country and was Medevac'd back to Hawaii. I am a Captain in the Ohio Army National Guard now and would appreciate any help in locating others that might have known him. Thanks for your great website and service. Bob, , I was over 68-69 3/4 cav c troop, worked the bo-loy and hoboy woods to death, ran convoy just north of Saigon to tha-nin during monsoon. What a mess it was and Cu Chi was in full bloom when I was there.
I have no desire to go back and see where I got my life of injuries and the Government turning their backs on we Viet-Nam vets

Hi Bob-I was in the 554 construction engineers and we also rode the ole Walker troop ship to VN. We arrived there in April 67 and started building a permanent post. I was a machinist in A company 554. Came home (ets) in Dec 67. Was glad to see CuChi in its infantcy. Great website
