Digital cameras are great for producing corrected white balance in their files, unlike in the bad olde film days when one had to either use film balanced specifically for the kind of lighting being used or had to use filters, but often even digital cameras don’t get the white balance right and produce files with a color cast to them.

I’ve seen quite a few of these poorly corrected shots on pBase recently, so perhaps it would be good to outline how I correct the white balance in my shots.

There are many ways to accomplish this, and even though I shoot only RAW format and process it in Photoshop’s Adobe Camera RAW plugin which has controls for correcting white balance, even it still often doesn’t get it quite right.

Since the first thing I do in processing a file is to create a Levels Adjustment Layer in Photoshop, much of what I do there automatically removes color cast from poorly white balanced files.
