half Jaws

I managed to disturb a nest of these monsters each about 25 mm or 1 inch long, and with a fierce bite. Having scooped a few into a dish to attempt close-up shots, I noticed this one apparently with one mandible broken, but still quite impressive. It was returned to the nest after smiling for the camera.

Yvonne had to go and mention the Funnel-web <|8*0 That is one spider I haven't come to terms with yet. Good close up Brian; that's one big worker ant. g

That's an inch ant? They can JUMP like a funnelweb spider, hope you managed to
eradicate the nest. Superb shot. v

She's tiny by human standards, but that's enormous for an ant. I wonder if she can regrow the missing mandible? Other creatures with exoskeletons can, such as crabs and lobsters. I don't know how the economy of the nest works with respect to healing the injured. Her armor is most impressive, like something out of a 1930s science fiction illustration. The spindle on back is incredible! I enjoy seeing the insects up close like this.
