Southern night sky (#2 of 2)

Southern night sky (#2 of 2)

Viewed from my garden (4.28 am, 8 December, 2007) looking almost due south at an elevation of 50 degrees using the Nikkor 50 mm, f/1.8 lens. This is a first effort at photographing the night sky with a view to learning more about stars visible from my little patch.

Star location and identification was made using the Stellarium desktop planetarium (see location image, below and next).

While several months late to the party, I'm delighted to discover Planetarium Merlotadl. I was momentarily confused to think I saw the Pleiades. And then it turned out that indeed I had. I'm amazed at the sharpness for a 15-second exposure. I can't help feeling envious of how free from light pollution your own back yard is. I hope it will serve as staging area for many more photos as the stars move through the seasons. I'm looking forward to it!

Vicky has a friend at her work with a telescope that they can attach there 400D to. Interesting what can be done now-a-days. Nice star scape Brian, like the inclusion of the trees. VOTE!
