whereas the usually recommended procedure is to shoot
in full sunlight around midday!

I've noticed for sometime that photos---and paintings for that matter---with a ratio of very little light to lots of darkness can be extremely dramatic. The Great Masters of the 17th century exploited that very well. You are achieving images with sufficient detail in the shadows that the space is still well used. And where there is bright light it brings great energy to the composition. This photo for example conveys a sense of finally finding the light after much searching. It's like a burst of energy and relief.
