Prickly Pear

Prickly Pear (Opuntia) has beautiful flowers but is notorious since in the 1920's it infested over 25 million acres in Queensland
before being controlled by introduction of an insect that laid eggs in its tissues,
after which the grubs ate the cactus to destruction.

As you say, beautiful flowers. We saw it doing very well in the ghost town of Menzies, in the goldfields. This is a very healthy specimen.

It's a pity! Nice shot, love the clear sky on a hot summer day, Brian. V
It reminds me of the precise rules about plants of the Australian custom, even our stationery items must be packaged with fumigated pallets to Australia.

Glad we don't have it growing here in the hills Brian, but it makes a great shot!
