California Condors

These shots were taken on one great morning when as part of the Monterey Bay Birding Festival we were guided to this coastside building site 10 miles south of Nepenthe by the Ventana Wilderness Society who has the responsibility for watching over these animals which are captive born and rearded until the age of one when they are released. Currently they are still fed three times weekly to supplement what they find in the wild and the oldest are just reaching the age of nine when they can reproduce. The bottom 3 series of shots demonstrate interesting bird behaviour. They show flight takeoff, chase and landing sequences. All birds carry their numbers and radiotelimitry transmitters. I suggest you use the slideshow option in the upper right corner of this page for viewing them most efficently.
