May 2007 Buffalo Gathering and Conference

Held at Hurricane Valley Park (West Virginia).
Rick Bird, Head Drum Keeper/Head Drummer for the Bird Chopper Family Drum, from Cherokee, N.C., served as emcee. Other drums included Fearless Hawk, Little Red Tail and Red Shield Singers.

The remains of several hundred Native Americans from a burial mound in Buffalo, West Virginia have remained at Ohio State University since the 1960s after being unearthed by archeologists. The once peaceful spot, dating back to the 15th and/or 16th centuries, was disturbed for the purpose of cultural studies, and then packed away.
Members of the Native American History Council of West Virginia are working to see the Native American bodies returned. Repatriation - getting those people back in the earth after years of lying in boxes.
