Testing Sigma 120-400 OS lens at Ft. Whyte Center

Just recently purchased a long lens 120-400mm Sigma Lens with Optical Stabilizer.

My results were a little mixed on some of the shots. I need to work with the settings a little bit more.

All images were taken with this lens. Ft. Whyte Center is a nature reserve in Winnipeg, Manitoba. I highly recommend the visit..

Hi Woody,

Thanks for publishing the photographic results of your trip to the zoo. I'm about to acquire the Sigma 120-400mm lens and your pictures and comments were very helpful. I won't be performing any "A"/"B" lens tests, so I'll have to trust in what I've read and viewed from enthusiastic photographers, such as yourself. What I've done recently is sell my Nikon equipment, including a Nikkor, 80-400mm VR lens and a Nikon camera, with a smaller megapixel count. Then I purchased a Canon 60D, plus some lenses and accessories. Almost needless to say, changing systems is very expensive and this was a large, "leap of faith." Some of my accessories can still be used, e.g., carbon fiber tripod. gadget bags, filters, etc. I guess I could have just sold the 80-400 Nikkor and acquired a new lens, but I needed a new camera anyway, that had better noise suppression, a higher pixel count and the ability to make larger prints. Initially I was pleased with the Nikkor lens, but it seemed to fall short as time went on and I started to receive requests for larger wildlife and nature prints, here in Florida. So, wish me luck. Also, I'd like to see some of your more recent photos---especially of wildlife. Regards, Jack

A bit of a pity the EXIF data was not preserved in these very nice pictures.

I recently purchased the Sigma 120-400 OS lens. I did a direct comparison with the Nikon 70-300 VR lens at a Zoo. The Sigma lens was significantly sharper at all focal lengths. I compared the Nikon at 300mm with the Sigma at 400mm. When cropping the Nikon photos to match the same magnification as the Sigma at 400mm, and printing at 11x14 in., the Sigma outperformed the Nikon in sharpness, both centrally and in the corners. The results were a surprise to me. I kept the Sigma and returned the Nikon. The extra reach of the Sigma, coupled with the better image quality, make it my new Wildlife lens.
