I love to play around at the computer, so here is another way to avoid doing the dishes. The blue heart is the bottom layer. As I added the additional designs and filled them, each time I went back into Edit>FADE FILL and reduced the opaque value to one I felt retained the strength of the symbol and allowed the bottom designs to show through. I merged down and then filled the background with black. If I had done the fill on its own layer the translucent colors would have been affected and I didn't want this to occur.
