Hi Carol! There are so many tests (biochemically) that you can do to differentiate S. aureus from L. lactis but the most common and basic tests that you could do are coagulase and catalase test, staining the organism for morphology and examining it under the microscope will help too. The growth of the colonies (macroscopically) on the culture plate will give you an idea what a Staph and a Lactococcus look like. Well, as I said, there are lots of other tests that you can do to differentiate the two. Hope this help.
