VR system is excellent for taking steady shots even at very slow shutter speeds but mainly "Still" subjects. For indoor shots (kids in movement or at the theater or to shoot basketball games) you need fast shutter speeds in order to freeze the action, thats why the 50mm f1.8D is the best alternative you can get for the price. A lens with an aperture of f1.8 is gonna allow you to shoot at 1/320s even under low levels of available light.
