Dowitchers are distinctive shorebirds, though at times the two species can be hard to seperate, especially at long distances. The juvenile plumage birds are the easiest, with Short-billed's being very strikingly marked. Basic-plumage adults pose the most trouble, and usually several features must be used to pin them down, though sometimes you can't.
