I was scanning this roadside ditch as I drove, hoping for something like a Bittern, but was still surprised to see this bird out almost totally in the open. I was at most 10 yards away.

It has been a long time since I've had a leisurely look like this at this wonderful bird! The detail of the loral skin on these birds is phenominal.
