Delta Amacuro Softtail

Orinoco River Delta

As unlikely as it seems, this appears to be the BEST photo of this bird that has ever been taken in the wild. Very few people have seen this bird since its discovery just a few years ago, and there have been very few photos taken at all. Clyde Blum also got some shots of this bird.

We were the 1st group EVER to see all three UNNAMED species of the area; this Softtail, and the Spinetail and Wagtail-Tyrant. The only other people that have seen all three species are our guide, David Ascanio, and Steve Hilty. I believe this was the 1st time David had seen all three in one day. Add the near-mythical Black-chested Tyrant to this day, and you have what I would condsider the most-exciting day of birding that I've ever had.

This bird obviously bears a strong resemblance to the equally poorly-known Orinoco Softtail, which occurs farther up the Orinoco. The ruby throat-patch was striking. We had practically given up on this bird at this location, when it practically flew into David.
