This is a better look at what I'm considering the male bird, slightly darker with a brighter bill. The bill usually has a more yellow cast to it, but is strongly olive in this light. The light markings on the body feathers are visible, as is the strong buff color of the face. Unfortunately, I was never able to get a shot of the bird with its neck extended, or with it parallel to me for a shot of the speculum. The fine facial markings on the Mallard to the right show above the unmarked throat, you can use this to see that the lower face of the Mottled is also unmarked. The black gape spot is just visible.
