This is the juvenile Yellow-billed Loon that has been at Lake Horton, south of Atlanta, of late for a 1st GA record. I made the 900-mile round-trip journey on 1/8/04, and had great looks at the bird. I never did get close enough to the bird to get the kind of shots I had hoped for, and that others have succeeded with. Lighting never was favorable for me, that and distance negated my results. This shot best shows the pale bill, with dark only extending narrowly out the inner culmen. In most lighting the outer half of the bill showed a stronger yellow color, with the basal half having a faint grayish tinge. The overall paleness of the bird, and the double-bump headshape are also apparent.
