Pacific Golden-Plover

Kauai, HI

This was one of a small group of three Pacific Golden-Plovers I found, the only ones for the trip. I stumbled across these birds in a yard in an area that I was searching for Japanese Quail. These birds are common winter residents, but I was hoping to run across some late stragglers. While it is just visible in this image, the tertails can barely be seen, but they come almost to the end of the tail on this bird, as compared to the longer wings/shorter tertialed look of our American Golden-Plovers. The extensive white on the vent and solid white flank stripe are also typical for Pacifics.
