Rough-legged Hawk

Hwy 79 east of Trezevant, Carroll Co TN view map

I initially saw this bird hovering along the side of the road as I was driving home. Saw the bird very well, initially thought it was a juvenile as I only saw a dusky tail band, but later saw the eyes to be dark and upperwing of an older bird, so not sure if subadult or adult, though looks basically like an adult female; very similar to the one Mark found in Dyer Co.

I had to go home to get my camera, and got back just before the Sun set to find the bird sitting in a tree along the road in the same area it was hunting. It was much less tolerant of observation than Mark's bird (probably good for it....), and flew quickly over the fields to the north when I stopped briefly. This is a bad location for stopping, as the shoulder drop off very fast and are narrow. Will post if I happen to see the bird again. I've had Rough-legged in this big open area before, as well as a migrating Swainson's. Also, very near where I had a Common Ground Dove several years ago.
