Brazil Atlantic Forest Birding 2010

The following images are from the first half of a two-week birding trip to Brazil. The first half was all based out of REGUA (Reserva Ecológica de Guapiaçu), a fantastic lodge about two hours drive out of Rio de Janeiro. The seven of us birded two and a half days around the REGUA property, including the waterfall trail, wetlands, and 4x4 trail. We then spent three days doing excursions to the Sumidouro area (Three-toed Jacamar), Pico da Caledonia, and Macae de Cima.

We had the services of the excellent guides employed by REGUA, Adilei Carvalho da Cunha and Leonardo Pimentel. Both of these guides are excellent with extensive knowledge of the vocalizations of all of the target species. Adelei speaks limited English, but Leonardo is fluent in English. They both use the English names for all of the birds so that is never an issue.

My trip list for this part of our trip was 283 species, of which 175 are represented in the 250 images in this gallery. We saw many endemics, including some of the crown jewels of the Atlantic Forests, such as Shrike-like Cotinga (aka Elegant Mourner or Brazilian Laniisoma), Three-toed Jacamar, and Gray-winged Cotinga.

Information about REGUA can be found here: http://www.regua.co.uk/
