Point Molate

These pictures record a morning spent exploring at Point Molate in Richmond, California. This bayside area was once inhabited by the Ohlone, later made part of the Castro Rancho and in the days after the 1906 Earthquake it was turned into a colony of winemakers by the California Wine Association which built the turreted brick buildings for its operations and the little row houses for employees. The winery operation closed around 1919 when Prohibition took force in the USA and the wine was dumped into San Francisco Bay. During WWII the Navy acquired the location and used the buildings for a fueling depot. The Navy's enormous fuel tanks can still be seen on the hillside above.
