We arrived in Paro, Bhutan during the 4th day of a five day festival. We spent the afternoon among the amazing people of Paro, most of whom I believe were in attendance. Buddhist monks performed dances depicting the triumph of good over evil. Their costumes were elaborate and the headgear/masks appeared to be very uncomfortable, but they danced out the stories over extended periods of time. After a while, my photo buddy, Glenn Morgan, and I moved to the other side of the courtyard and suddenly found ourselves in what served as the dressing area and wings for the next group of dancers preparing to join the original group. We were able to get close-ups of the masks and how they were attached to dancers. However, the best photos were of the children's faces, revering the dancers as if they were famous pop stars or athletes. (After watching the performances, I believe that they were, in fact, a bit of each.)
This was a perfect introduction to the culture of Bhutan.
