The Sylvannus G. Morley museum is the older of the two museums and contains artifacts found during the excavation of Temple I. The stelae are among the earliest stone monuments with hieroglyphs, from the Early Classic period.
Sylvannus Morley was a Mayanist in the early 20th century who came to Tikal several times to record inscriptions.
