I looked out through the glass of our dining room door to see this small, male Sharp-shinned Hawk sitting on the ground not far from our bird feeders. In its talons was a Carolina Chickadee that the hawk had just caught. This hawk is only 11 or 12 inches long. (The males are smaller than the females.)
I took the photo through the glass just before the hawk flew off into the nearby woods with its prey.
