Community leader and performer Heather MacAllister died on February 13th after a
three-year battle with ovarian cancer. She was 38 years old.
Ms. MacAllister was the founder and artistic director of San Francisco's Big
Burlesque and the Fat Bottom Revue ( http://www.bigburlesque.com/), the first
burlesque act exclusively featuring large-sized performers.
She earned a degree in Anthropology from Eastern Michigan University, and worked for
the Triangle Foundation, Michigan's statewide LGBT civil rights organization.
MacAllister was an advocate for the transgender population and for the rights of fat
people. She helped inspire the passage of San Francisco's anti-size discrimination
law in 2000. She was proud to have helped coordinate
a summit bringing together mainstream conservative Muslim and Arab
organizations and radical gay rights organizations as show of solidarity against the
civil rights offenses that occurred post 9/11.
She was a member of the Board of Directors of Al-Fatiha, the nation's only national
organization for sexual minority Muslims; and of NOLOSE, an organization for human
rights and culture for fat lesbians and transgendered people.
In 2005, Leonard Nimoy photographed Ms. MacAllister and her dance troupe for his
"Maximum Beauty" exhibit in New York City. MacAllister is survived by Grandma
Simion, her sisters Hope, Holly, Sossity and Tina and her beloved Chevalier Kelli
Dunham. Memorial services are taking place on February 25th in San Francisco,
