There's been a huge amount of investment into the infrastructure of Kashgar in recent years. Unfortunately, this has made the new districts look just like every other city in China. In Kashgar, an attempt has been made to incorporate Islamic motifs into what are in effect "garden variety" modern, buildings made from concrete. Better than a poke in the eye... There is a visible separation between the Uyghur parts of the "new" city and the Han Chinese parts (you cannot buy cigarettes in convenience stores in the Uyghur section).
