kitchen odds and ends

The crocks and containers were manufactured by
Redwing Stoneware Company, a company that was founded
in Red Wing, Minnesota. Stoneware crocks and pottery was the
primary means of storage in the old days.
The numbers on the crocks indicate capacity, eg the one bearing
the number 5, was a 5 gallon crock, etc.

I have the same 5 gallon red wing crock with the two handles (pictured in the center) and was curious what that type of crock was used for?
