Images of Central Pennsylvania

I live in Central Pennsylvania. I was born and raised in a medium sized town called Hazleton. It was founded on the industry of hard coal, called Anthracite. I grew up there in the 1950s as the coal industry was on a steep and final decline. The town withered from the lack of jobs, and it’s boom days were all but behind it. I left in the mid 1960s to go to college and eventually graduate school. I returned there after college but for only a brief stay and left for good to accept a teaching position at one of the State run Universities which was only about fifty miles away. I have lived in the Town of Bloomsburg for the last 35 years. The Town of Bloomsburg is predominantly a college and farming community. It feels like it is a million miles away from the coalfields, which are, so close, but so different in look and feel. I have always enjoyed wandering the region with my camera and now would like to share the visual diversity I love and constantly rediscover here with you. Some of the scars of mining are unbelievably harsh to observe but in spite of the reality they can appear quite beautiful and powerfully striking. The Susquehanna River runs through this area and the classical beauty is not to be overlooked. This is a land of extreme visual contradictions and I will endeavor to share with you, this the place that I have been blessed to call home. I hope over the coming months to keep posting “Images of Central Pennsylvania.” Enjoy, enjoy! Thanks for looking!
