David and Jason drive the team pulling a huge hook like device that breaks up the soil. The claw on the machine goes at least two feet deep and takes a huge force to pull it through the earth. Because of the unusual amount of strength needed to break up the hard packed ground David and Jason are using two teams of four draft horses and four mules hitched in two rows to pull this rig. It’s a very complicated hitching system and it was amazing to watch them hook it up so efficiently. They told me it’s not very common to use the teams this way and they don’t do it very often. They were also very concerned about a horse or mule deciding to take off running while still hooked to the rest of the teams. That could very easily become an extremely dangerous situation. In fact I was told about an incident on the next farm just yesterday where a team broke free from a wagon then running off towards their barn completely out of control. It was lucky that none of the farm children were out playing when that happened.
