Stampede redux.

The other day I posted a photo of the Belgium workhorse’s dinner stampede at the Mike Martin farm. I explained here that I had a terrible time with the photos exposure. That photo was far from a satisfying image and bothered the heck out of me. I was really annoyed with myself for missing a great opportunity to get a photograph of these wonderful horses in action. Well if at first you don’t succeed……you know, try try again. So today I finally got myself back to the farm right at the end of the of the day and shot the action again. I had been going over in my mind what had gone wrong the first time, and how to insure a better outcome. I took a few test shots and then changed the camera metering to spot metering and upped the speed and ISO and with trepidation waited. The farmer Mike asked if I was ready “uh, maybe I thought to myself?” He called out to the herd and they all came running full speed again towards the barn. I shot at the horses in a rapid burst thinking, “I hope I didn’t screw this up again.” I think this attempt is far better than the first, whew. It’s not to often we get a second chance as photographers, to try again to get it better after a bad attempt. I’m thinking of other ways to shoot this daily stampede yet again. Who knows, one day I might get the perfect shot?

This one is much better! One great thing is that these horses look so happy, in spite of being work animals. Great shot.
