Near sunset at the Martin farm this evening, Mike the Mennonite farmer told me he was about ready to call his horses in from the pasture for their gourmet dinner of hay. He said it might make an interesting photograph, as they always run from the fields into the barn at a full speed gallop. I found a “safe” spot and waited while Mike called the horses. They all stopped grazing, looked up, and then turned around and made a frantic beeline for the barn. What an exciting sight. It was difficult to get a perfect exposure of the action with the sun setting, and shade of the barn confusing the camera metering. To make it even more difficult to get a proper exposure, the difficulty of trying to freeze the movement of the horses. All this chaos going on at the same instant made it nearly impossible to experiment with camera settings. I’m determined to go back soon, and try it all again. Farmer Mike told me as long as the weather holds up, he will put the herd out each day, and that means more exciting stampedes to enjoy and try to capture in a photo.
