These photos were taken the afternoon of Saturday February 6, 2010, now known as SNOWMAGEDDON, on Beechwood Blvd. in Squirrel Hill, Pittsburgh. The official snowfall amount for the city was 21.4". However, we measured snow in our area at 23"-24"!

The night before, there was only about an inch at 6pm, even though it had been flurrying since 1pm that day. The initial forecast was for 6-10" total, from 6pm - 6am. When we took the kids out to play at 7:30pm, there was about 4". By 10:30pm there was 7", and by 12:30am there was 10". It snowed through 6am. The snow was wet and heavy, so was perfect for snowballs and snowmen! (The kids were even able to dig a 'snow tunnel' the next day, on our sidewalk! I don't remember THAT every happening before!) It also caused my daughter's co-worker to get stuck in front of our house at 9pm, and then when her boyfriend showed up to pick her up, his battery died! So we had to 'rescue' two cars by 11pm! Was quite the night, with neighbors pushing out squealing cars, heavy snow steadily falling, etc!

The thing I'll remember most though (besides all of the digging!), was how incredibly beautiful it was!! It was hard to go to sleep that night. I just wanted to keep watching the snow fall, highlighted by the amber street lights outside, and transforming our street, and wonder how much more would come down ...

Not ONE car passed down our major street from about 1am - 7am!! And our street is a major artery. It was so peaceful and quiet, it felt like we were living on a cul de sac and not a major artery. The next morning, the whole neighborhood came out, and started digging, walking, taking photos, talking, skiing, helping each other, and mostly uncovering cars buried under almost 2 feet of snow. It was like a HUGE block party!! I met many neighbors I never knew I had, due to our usually busy street. Turns out, there were a few power lines down across Beechwood, and I was surprised that afternoon how many people were out trying to drive somewhere, only to have to turn around at the next downed line!

Captions are below some of the photos. Sunday and the rest of the week are to be COLD, so this snow is NOT going anywhere....until maybe...April???

Overall, this was the 4th largest amount of snow ever to fall on Pittsburgh, in the past couple of hundred years. And Friday broke the record for the most snow to fall in one day, ever. We won't forget this storm for a long time. I'm glad our kids got to enjoy it, and I'm sure they'll also remember it for a long time. We're mainly grateful that we did not loose our power, and our kids really had a good time! So did the adults - for the most part!
