Very interesting. A previous comment made was about the printer model. Can you advise.
I do have a laser printer but it folds the paper and may not be hot enough to bond the
toner to the pcb. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks.

The PCB can be printed by inkjet printer,such as EPSON R220, R2200. Some wood, glass, stone demo are listed in http://hi.baidu.com/gdprinter.

Most interesting....I've always been under the impression that the trickiest part to direct laser printing was the transfer of the toner from the imaging unit to the target(PCB)....very impressive!!! So from the looks of it, you modified the printer so that the PCB becomes a part of the transfer roller/belt?

what about just scratch building a "laser" printer using hv supplies, the optics from the printer and a surplus scanner?

i was looking into doing something much like this using a laser to "fuse" the toner directly to the board...

The trace width is one thing, but the trace spacing is another. Not belittling Mark's work (2mil trace with toner is impressive), but I can etch 2mil traces with photo methods as well. The real challenge is to tighten up the spacing. I've gotten down to 5mil spacing with my photo process, hopefully toner can do even better!

You printed a 2-mil trace; that is the most impressive thing I've ever seen.

Most people just modify the printer to print onto a flat surface, but the toner doesn't transfer well.

You modified the charging circuit to give the copper a negative charge to attract the positive toner particles. The normal charge circuit is used for paper which does not have the capacitance or the copper clad board.

This is impressive, I've been looking for a system like this for some time. Can you give any more details, like how you convinced the toner to stick to the PCB properly, etc etc?

this is amazing. im thinking about getting a laser printer of ebay for some evil cannibalisation as per your images (sort of). some sort of writeup would be great. could i recomend www.instructables.com to put it on

Mark, This looks very promising. I have an old HP Laserjet 4MP that has paper pickup problems, so it may be the ideal candidate to try modifying. I am an electronics technician and used to service laser printers, but haven't done so for some time. About time I tried again. Thank you so much for your research, it helps to make the job easier and better for us all.
