Madeira - Funchal

Funchal, population approximately 140,000, is the capital of the Madeira Islands of Portugal. Funchal is also the largest city on the islands It was founded by João Gonçalves Zarco in 1421 and was elevated to city status by King Manuel I in 1508.
Today Funchal is a modern city, located in a unique area; the natural geological features form an "amphitheatre" surrounding the city, which begins at the harbour and rises almost 1200 metres
high on gentle slopes. This provides a natural shelter and was what attracted the first settlers.

Camâra de lobos is an important fishing village situated 9 Km west of Funchal. This village proved irresistible to Sir Winston Churchill in 1950 and was later made famous by his paintings of this little fishing harbour.

Fabulous Photography. I was at the Fishing Village recently and found a tiny Chapel dedicated,our tour guide toldus,to "Our lady of Conception"-can you tell me any more

Hello, i enjoyed looking at your beautiful pictures. Thank you for sharing them. I was wondering if you know where i can view pictures of monte and sao goncalo from 1970-1910.I would love to view those. Oh and do you have any recent pictures of sao goncalo? Christy

just returned last week from Madeira. The pictures are really beautiful and have brought back many memories of this beautiful island, which I have been visiting since I was a 7 yr old child of Madeiran parents. Now my 12 yr old absolutely adores the island and cant wait to go again on her 3rd visit and I have also successfully introduced this beautiful island to my husband, who, as well as my 12 yr old is British and has fallen in love with everything, above all the friendliness of the islanders, as well as the mild climate.

A great scenic trip around Funchal area.....Maderia is also on my list of places to visit......your lovely images make me think the sooner the better.... it is a unique island I think...something you have portrayed well here.
