The nice surrealism of ancient toponomy…
In Paris, just as quick example, there is a bridge called “Pont-neuf” (the new bridge) which is actually the oldest of the town.
In Strasbourg there is a street called “Grand-Rue” (big Street) which is relatively long, but rather narrow, without anything so monumental, which might justify the adjective “Big”.
But it’s adorably charming, lined with ancient small coloured houses and full of cosy cafés and intriguing little shops.
We went to have breakfast in this red baroque fanciful café, filled with embarrassing golden angels, flying over a generous display of cakes.
Coffee was good, croissants a little less angelic, but the whole atmosphere was amusing…
