Very close to the Roman amphitheatre there is a charming castle, as if two historical periods were side by side...
After the destruction of the ancient Aventicum by the Barbarians, the inhabitants had taken shelter on the hill SW of the city. In the year 607, Count Wilhelm of Burgundy built a castle on the northern side of the hill. Just completed, the castle was destroyed in 616. In the eleventh century the castle was built or reconstructed to serve as abode for the bishop of Lausanne .
Later the reconstruction of the castle of Avenches started again from 1565 to 1568, at least judging from the dates carved on the facade, to include the Roman tower which is located behind.
