The Cathedrale de la Major from the sea

Marseille (France)

This gigantic church, always built in the fanciful roman-byzantine style which is typical of other churches in Marseille, was an idea of Napoelon III, who wanted to please the Roman Church and the inhabitants of the town at once.
The building is a bit too pompous and, unluckily, to build it they pulled down the greatest part of a former Romanic church much more ancient and probably architectonically more interesting.
Nevertheless this cathedrale has become part of the familiar landscape of Marseille and some people call it ironically “the pyjama” because of the stripes of white and beige colours.
