"Le bon Roi René" - the good king René

Aix-en-Provence

The good king René stands at one end of cours Mirabeau
and keeps in his hand a cluster of Muscat grapes,
which he was the first to import to Provence.
Who was actually King René the good?
He was born in 1409 and died in 1480.
A very long life for those times.
He was very well educated, an expert of mathematics,
a passionate of music and he loved to organize sumptuous parties.
Under his government the town of Aix developed
and went through a very brilliant period.
After his first wife’s death,
when he was already 44
he fell in love with a 21 years old young lady
called Jeanne de Laval and he married her,
who become “la Reine Jeanne” –the queen Jeanne- as popular in Provence as her husband.
