Colza Fields

Brassica campestris, or field cabbage,is a cruciferous plant which grows wild throughout the greater part of Europe,
and is largely cultivated in France, Switzerland and Germany for the sake of colza, as the oil from its seeds is called.
 






I like adding a few new photos to this gallery every year.
It’s my way to celebrate the seasonal meeting with this ephemeral yellow spring beauty,
since colza field are in flower for only a few days
and then they become quite banal greenish field of ...average high grass.
And at the end the storm came... Colza 73 In the wind... Colza 72 Look for the intruder....

I am, and have been in awe of your capabilites, not only as a photographer, but as an "artiste" when it comes to presenting your work. Simply SENSATIONAL! I had not seen this gallery until today, when you posted a new photo and I thought to myself "just how many different ways are there to photograph a yellow field." Lo and behold you have posted 70 and they are all so different - sometimes they are wide angle views, sometimes in close up, then the sky may be threatening or you introduce an animal, you may process it differently etc etc. A lesson for us all on many varied ways there are looking at and recording a single subject. Very well done indeed.

Dear Marissa ~ Your photographs are beautiful and I too enjoy photography. We visited Quebec, Canada, last summer (2009) and Colza Fields were in full bloom. I have a few good photos of the fields on the island of Ille d'Orleans which is across the Saint Lawrence River. It is a most beautiful island. Hopefully, you will visit it sometime.

Wonderful gallery. It's interesting what seems commonplace may be exotic to someone else. Beautiful contrasts with the yellow flowers and the green fields. Great eye for the commonplace, that really isn't.

This stuff is everywhere around where I live (I believe farmers get big subsidies to grow it), but I have always found it strangely difficult to get a good photograph of it! Perhaps this year.... (great gallery dedicated to the scourge of hayfever sufferers!)

In England we call this plant 'Rape' from the Latin 'Rapum' - meaning turnip. Unfortunately Rape has another unpleasant meaning in English and so 'Colza' is a much nicer word - I think we should adopt it! Your beautiful photos are very reminiscent of late Spring-early Summer - my favourite time of year, and the gallery is so well presented with the yellow style sheet and fabulous banner! Big vote

Les champs de colza fleurissent nos campagnes de merveilleuse façon: La preuve est là. Aussi, il est très difficile en numérique de reproduire avec fidélité le jaune éclatant tel qu'il nous apparaît sans perdre de la définition, mais je n'ai jamais compris pourquoi...
Cette galerie est très réussie malgré cette difficulté et la présentation splendide comme toujours. Bravo!

I think you have done a marvelous job with this gallery, Marisa! You have managed to keep it consistent, and that is very good. I really like the combination of blue and yellow the way you have presented it here. De superbes compositions ! C'est super gentil cette attention de m'éduquer sur ton pays .. Je vais voir si dans ton petit livre Histoire Suisse, ils parlent de ce champs de fleurs jaune ! ( belle mise en page aussi ! :-) Superbe) MERCI ma très chère amie pleine de fromage et chocolat Suisse mais jamais en retard parce que les montres Suisses sont précises !
