Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC

Statuary Fragments for the Great Temple of the Aten at Amarna
Dynasty 18, reign of Akhenaten, ca. 1353-1336 B.C. (Years 6-8)
Indurated limestone, diorite,

Although marked by violence, the fragments remain strongly evocative
of the beauty and drama of the statuary that stood in the Great Temple
of the Aten at Amarna. Within its huge brick enclosure wall were
two stone structures - a very large one toward the front and the smaller
Sanctuary toward the back. When the temple was demolished, after the
Amarna period, statues from the Sanctuary were broken up, useful masses
were carried away, and the rest was discarded in a dump outside the wall
at a spot near the Sanctuary.
