Castilleja hispida

Common name: Harsh Paintbrush

USDA & ITIS list 3 varities:
ssp. acuta (Acute Paintbrush) found WA to WY to NV
ssp. brevilobata (Short-lobe Paintbrush) found only in N. CA.
ssp. hispida (Harsh Paintbrush) found in B.C. Alberta to OR.

Generally found at lower elevations. Bracts are broad, deeply lobed.

Of the two varieties, (hispida and acuta)
var. hispida is found with 2-4 pairs of lateral lobes on upper leaves.
var. acuta has 1-2 pairs of lateral lobes on upper leaves.
Also note the green flowers extending beyond the bracts, and the colored tinged leaves at the top of plant.
